I know you can read it everywhere. After the holidays, time for a green refresh. And now I am adding even more content to this topic! Why? Because I do believe it is a good start to a new year. In January I want to feel as if everything is calm and controlled and starting with the plants is a great starting point. Though I collected a few beautiful pots and planters in the LTK shop “Post-Holiday Refresh: Chic Planters for a Cozy Home” you can realize the same feeling with some existing pots.
Do you recognize that? That you want to start the New Year with a clean slate? You are not the only one. It is a common experience, supported by psychological research. We want to set new goals and make a fresh start.
Post-Holiday Blues: that feeling of sadness after the holiday season when the festive activities are over, and we must return to regular routines.
Do you want to have that sense of calm and order as the new year begins? If you are looking for simple ways to refresh your home and mindset, starting with your indoor greenery, you are in the right place. In 3 steps you can reach that sense of calm and order.
This post first appeared in January 2025, and I wanted to return to it with a small update.
Reorganize
- After clearing out the holiday decorations make space for your plants to shine.

- Use the Christmas tree information; was your Christmas tree in a place where no plant ever stood? If you liked the green atmosphere of the tree on that spot it is a reason to place a large plant, there now.

a large plant replaces the Christmas tree.
- Make new combinations, a simple styling rule you can use is the combination of odd numbers. This asymmetry creates a visual pleasing arrangement. Like a high plant in combination with a somewhat wider, low plant and a candle in between those sizes.

white on white and pink on pink
- Another simple styling tip, use the same color for the pot as the color of the flowers, like a white pot with a white orchid or pink with pink.

2 plants to put in the “nursery” after they have flowered.
- In my guest bedroom, I keep plants that aren’t at their best right now, but that will bloom again — like orchids, a Christmas cactus, or an amaryllis. I also have one plant (I’m not entirely sure, but I think it’s a Schefflera) that loses its leaves every year after summer and then comes back beautifully in the new year. If you have space for a small plant nursery, this is a lovely moment to create one.
Repot
- Clean up your plants by trimming dead or yellow leaves. You can prune the plants a bit but if you want to remove a lot of branches you better wait until early spring. In that time of year with longer daylight it is much easier for the plants to recover.
- Clean the leaves by using a damp cloth, and for plants like a Monstera you can use a little bit of milk.
- Repot and use new soil, this is the moment where you can see if you need new planters.
Refresh

Next step is shopping. This can be in your own collection of planters in a thrift store or for a new planter at Ikea or finally you can go for that design planter you always wanted.
It is important that you know exactly what size you need if you want to repot a plant. Size up a bit so the plant can grow for the next few years. Use chic pots or planters to complement your post-holiday decor. Neutral tones or textured ceramics work great for a cozy vibe.
If you want to add some seasonal plants think of Cyclamen (prefers cooler temperatures) Amaryllis, Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum, thrives in low to medium light) or you might already use some bulbs like Paperwhite Narcissus or grape hyacinth.
You can also try another plant. The Jatropha Multifida is very worthwhile.

To be honest, like in 2025, I have not started yet with my post-Holiday refresh for I’m beginning writing first. The rest will follow. It’s next on my list.
For now, this is where I am: writing first, refreshing next. Step by step. I’ll be sharing the small changes I make at home, along with weekend ideas, travel inspiration and all shades of green. Thank you for being here and reading along, it truly means a lot.
