How to Create a Meaningful and Stylish Gallery Wall
A gallery wall is more than just a decorative feature, it’s a way to showcase your personality, memories, and passions. Whether you display family photos, travel snapshots, or beloved artwork, a well-curated gallery wall adds warmth and character to your home. And the best part? It’s easy to start and can evolve over time. So start a gallery wall that tells your story.
Personalizing Your Gallery Wall
When designing a gallery wall, think about what matters most to you. Do you love travel? Nature? Abstract art? Grouping pieces by theme or color keeps the display cohesive while ensuring it reflects your style.
- In my own home, I have a black-and-white gallery wall in my hallway, set against a beautifully neutral grey wall (Purbeck Stone by Farrow & Ball). The monochrome tones keep the look calm and timeless. Each photo represents a place that holds personal significance for me:
- Utrecht, where I was born
- Switzerland, where I worked
- Chicago & New York, where part of my family lived and lives
- Paris, my favorite city
- Nashville, Zagreb, South Africa, Iceland, and other beloved travel destinations
Visitors always pause in front of the gallery wall, sparking conversations about places they’ve been or dream of visiting. I love that it not only beautifies my space but also connects me to others.
Time for an Upgrade: Refreshing Frames
For years, I’ve used Ikea’s Ribba frames, which have been a fantastic budget-friendly choice. They’re easy to expand whenever I add a new photo. But over time, the foil on the MDF frames has started peeling. Now, I’m exploring ways to upgrade my gallery wall while keeping its elegant, timeless feel.
Update August 2026: I decided to keep my IKEA Ribba frames and only replace a few of them. Ribba is no longer available, but IKEA now has a very similar frame called Rödalm.
Some ideas I’m considering:
- Painting the frames – Can I refresh them with a coat of color (muted tones)
- Switching to new frames – Perhaps classic wooden frames for warmth or aluminum frames for a sleek, modern touch.
- Mixing in new elements – Maybe incorporating mirrors or a related souvenir.
One thing is certain—the gallery wall stays!
Tips for Creating Your Own Gallery Wall
If you’re inspired to create or refresh your own gallery wall, here are some simple steps:
1. Choose a Theme
- Travel photos, nature scenes, family portraits, or abstract art—stick to a theme for a cohesive look.
- Keep it monochrome (like mine) for a serene effect or mix vibrant colors for energy.
Update August 2026: Last year, I bought a new artwork, Akari 1AV Print – Green Sun by Isamu Noguchi. It could be the starting point for a new gallery wall, this time based on color.
At a Banksy exhibition, I saw an early version of Flower Thrower (also known as Love is in the Air), reportedly created as a Valentine’s Day gift for his then-girlfriend. A green version would make a great addition to this new gallery wall.
2. Plan Your Layout

- Arrange frames on the floor first to find the perfect composition.
- Use paper templates taped to the wall before hammering in nails. (Personally, I often don’t have the patience for that! 😉)
- Maintain equal spacing for a polished, balanced look.
- Your TV (like my Samsung Frame, can be a part of the gallery wall)
3. Upgrade Your Frames and Prints
Frames don’t just hold your pictures — they also help define the style of your gallery wall. The same artwork can feel completely different in a classic, ornate frame than it does in a simple black or natural wood frame.
