When I left my job at KPN about five years ago, I knew it was time for a new chapter. Like many of us, I had a long list of things I’d been putting off during my working years. One of the first things I tackled was my home, making updates not just for style, but for comfort and ease as I looked ahead to the next stage of life. More about Home Makeover Kit. In this post, I’ll share how it all began for me. Hopefully, it will give you some ideas—and the confidence—to start your own makeover journey.
Why change your home when life changes?
When we go through a new phase in life (like retiring or seeing the kids move out), something shifts inside us. We’re not quite the same person we were, and that often shows up in the way we look at our homes.
Your home reflects who you are.
Over the years, our homes have filled up with memories, habits, and routines. But when your daily life changes, it’s only natural to want your space to reflect the person you are now and not just the version of you from ten years ago. I felt that strongly when I left my job. Suddenly, I had the time and headspace to think about what I really wanted in my surroundings.
The steps I made
One of the first things I did was declutter. I read the book by tidying-up guru Marie Kondo, which really helped me get started.I bought a new bed and mattress, renovated the bathroom, and created a guest bedroom for the grandchildren.I also added lights that turn on automatically in spots where I’d almost tripped a few times, and installed remote-controlled lighting and window shades for when I’m traveling.

I realized that so many of us go through similar transitions, but we don’t always know where to start when it comes to updating our homes. It’s not about throwing everything out or doing a full renovation. It’s about small, thoughtful changes that help your space grow with you.
