Today a lot of people in the Netherlands are off from work, it is May 5th, Liberation Day. There are Music Festivals to celebrate this, movies on TV about World War II, and in our area, you can admire a convoy of old vehicles and motorcycles. But there is another option to be active today; just take time to do something for yourself. If you are thinking about changing your room, it’s time to create an interior mood board. And with the help of Woonlookbook, a little inspiration and a lot of heart, you can design a space that aligns with your current style, passions, and dreams.
Two types of mood boards
When designing a room, you can create two kinds of boards: a concept board and a mood board. Both are valuable tools, but they serve different purposes in the design journey.
1. Concept board
A concept board is all about the big picture. It helps you define the overall atmosphere or theme you want for your space. Think of it as a visual compass, it’s not yet about picking exact furniture or colors but about capturing the feeling you want to evoke. Maybe it’s a cozy reading nook inspired by vintage libraries, or a light and airy kitchen that channels Mediterranean calm. The concept board sets the tone.

The picture above shows a concept board. The style is a bit rustic sphere with greens and greys, but it is meant for a guest bedroom and is not very specific (although I used the wall paper in a later phase as background in a frame with pictures of the grand children – picture below).

2. Mood Board
A mood board takes the concept a step further. It begins to include more concrete elements: fabric swatches, color palettes, sample materials, specific pieces of furniture, or décor items you love. It’s where the abstract becomes tangible. A mood board is your personal style story, one that brings the room closer to reality.
Why you should make a mood board today
1. It helps you refocus on what you love now
Your home should reflect who you are today, not just who you were ten or twenty years ago. A mood board helps you rediscover your current tastes and preferences. Maybe you’ve outgrown dark wood furniture or you’re craving more color and texture. Seeing your ideas visually collected will clarify what still resonates, and what it’s time to let go of.
2. It reduces overwhelm before you make any big changes
Feeling stuck or unsure about where to begin? Creating a mood board can simplify the process. Instead of jumping into shopping or redecorating impulsively, you can take a step back and explore your options safely on paper (or screen). It builds confidence, helps avoid costly mistakes, and keeps your makeover focused and joyful.
