Weekend tips are there in many categories, this one belongs to the list of cultural things to do in the weekend! Our reason was “a dishwasher”. Yes, an artwork in my brother’s house, for many years already, surprises you every time again. It is so hyper realistic! I once saw the original in Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle a few years ago and now there is an exhibition of more than 60 very realistic works of the artist. Therefore: weekend tip Museum Jan in Amstelveen.

Exhibition Tjalf Sparnaay

With the anniversary exhibition The Bigger Picture, Museum JAN in Amstelveen celebrates the 70th birthday of visual artist Tjalf Sparnaay. Sparnaay, internationally known and praised for his iconic oil paintings of fried eggs and flattened cola cans, showcases the greatness of the small in Museum JAN. With its hyper-realistic style it enchants the viewer, who immediately believes in the power of his imagination. But Sparnaay also shows that there is indeed a personal inspiration in the photographic, objective approach to his subjects.

Collection (permanent)

This museum has a diverse collection of glass objects with a focus on modern sculptural glass from the 20th/21st century. You will find works by Stanislav Libenský & Jaroslava Brychtová, Vaclav Cigler en Bohumil Eliáš.

A collection of Sam Francis, an American, abstract expressionist painter and sculptures of bronze and marble of Jan Verschoor.

The museum also owns two masterpieces, one by Harry Bertoia and one by Ossip Zadkine.

Practical

The museum is in the center of Amstelveen, Dorpsstraat 50. In general, there are enough parking spaces around the museum. It is closed on Monday (but open both upcoming Easter days)

The Tjalf Sparnaay Exhibition is from February 16 until June 16, 2024.

Bonus tips

  • In March/April the cherry blossoms bloom in “het Amsterdamse Bos.” An extra reason to plan this in the coming weeks. (can be busy!)
  • A very suitable exhibition to visit with (grand)children. Because what could be more fun than looking at ice cream or burgers and ketchup, even if it is in a museum?

Enjoy this weekend tip Museum Jan in Amstelveen!
