So sorry, this post was meant for March, not May! I\u2019m leaving it up anyway, so consider me nicely early for next year\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day \ud83d\ude0a<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, International Women\u2019s Day falls on a Sunday. Not that it really\u00a0matters;\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not someone who joins demonstrations, but there\u00a0is<\/em>\u00a0one tradition\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0quietly kept for years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year around International Women\u2019s Day, I watch a movie. And this time, since it\u2019s on a Sunday, I\u2019ll probably watch it on the day itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A movie? Yes\u2026 let me explain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is International Women\u2019s Day?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every year on March 8, we celebrate International Women\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to International Women’s Day<\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cInternational Women’s Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years, as have many of the issues still\u00a0impacting\u00a0women’s advancement. Since 1911, IWD belongs to all who care about gender equality. Celebrate women’s\u00a0achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination.\u00a0Take action to forge\u00a0gender parity. All IWD activity is valid\u2014that’s\u00a0what makes IWD so inclusive.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n\n\n

For whom does it matter?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, I sometimes wonder how much this day lives among younger generations. I should ask my 14-year-old granddaughter if it\u2019s something they talk about at school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my generation, though, it truly means something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The generation before us lived with limitations that are almost hard to imagine now. In the Netherlands, married women could lose their jobs. And until the year I was born, women were not even allowed to sign contracts or make major purchases without their husband\u2019s permission, due to the Legal Incapacity Act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you pause to think about that, it changes how you look at your everyday freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I do on this day?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To remind myself, just once a year, of the opportunities I\u2019ve been given, I\u2019ve created a small, personal ritual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2019, I intentionally watch the movie On the Basis of Sex.<\/a> It tells the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her fight for equal rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each time I watch it, I\u2019m reminded of how much has changed\u2026 and how much effort it took to get there. <\/p>\n\n\n

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an American lawyer and Supreme Court Justice who became a symbol of gender equality. Through landmark legal cases, she fought discrimination against women and helped change laws that limited women\u2019s independence, work opportunities, and financial rights. Her life continues to inspire generations of women around the world.<\/em><\/div>\n\n\n

It\u2019s a quiet moment of reflection, and in a way, gratitude. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
