Zeeland is always a promising idea. In spring (at least for me) and summer for swimming, in fall and winter for long walks on the beach and every season for visiting the historic villages and towns. One of the places I like especially is Zierikzee on Schouwen-Duiveland. In this blog there is more about Zeeland, and a weekend tip for Zierikzee.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waar overnachten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the first weeks after they opened, I stayed in the Mondragon<\/a> in the heart of historic Zierikzee. The first time with my daughter, later alone. I like the atmosphere of the hotel and restaurant and it is a particularly good base to drive to the various sights on Schouwen-Duiveland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a great B&B\u2019s we liked in the center of Burgh-Haamstede: Bed & Baguette.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to visit in Zeeland, and especially Schouwen-Duiveland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Zeelandbrug<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the Zeelandbrug,  a road bridge over the Oosterschelde with a total length of 5022 meters (about 3.12 mi). It connects Noord-Beveland with Schouwen-Duiveland, thus providing a shorter connection with the towns of Middelburg and Goes on the southern side, and Zierikzee and Bruinisse on the northern side.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Delta Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Delta Works prevent a repeat of the 1953 flood disaster. I remember we had a book at home about this disaster. As a child I read it again and again, impressed by the photos of the water that had risen to the roofs. The people rescued in boats and animals lying dead in the water. De Delta Works consists of 5 storm surge barriers, 2 locks and 6 dams. You can visit the information center Delta Park Neeltje Jans.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zierikzee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Visit Zierikzee, known for its well-preserved medieval center. As mentioned before, Hotel the Mondragon is a good starting point for a walk in the center. A harbor, historic buildings, arches, shops, time to put on your walking shoes and hit the road. At the VVV or in the hotel there is a walking guide available. Architecture <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The architecture of Schouwen-Duiveland characterizes by a blend of historic and modern styles, reflecting its rich history and coastal location.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historic Architecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Schouwen-Duiveland is home to several historic churches and estates like De Grote Kerk in Zierikzee, Sint Nicolaaskerk in Brouwershaven, Sint Corneliuskerk in Noordgouwe, Haamstede Castle in Burgh Haamstede and Moermond Castle in Renesse.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Castle and Church in Burgh-Haamstede<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the center of Burgh Haamstede you will find Haamstede Castle. Built in the 13th century, burned down, then restored and expanded in the 18th century.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Dutch Reformed church is a three aisled cruciform church without a tower or choir which was built in the early 16th century as a replacement of the 11th century church which burnt down in 1506. The church was restored in 1956.\u201d Wikipedia <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the historic well-preserved town centers, (Zierikzee, Brouwershaven) you will find charming cobblestone streets, traditional Dutch gabled houses, and picturesque canals. These areas display architecture from different periods, including medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Countryside<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I love in the countryside the traditional Dutch farmhouses with characteristic (thatched) roofs and brick facades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Architecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Watersnoodmuseum<\/a> in Ouwerkerk is seen as an example of modern architecture<\/strong> at Schouwen-Duiveland. To be honest, I wouldn’t describe it as modern architecture, but as an architecturally special building. The museum is housed in four concrete caissons, which were originally used to close the last breach in the dike after the disaster. These caissons have a massive, industrial look and form the heart of the museum architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beach and Dunes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The beaches and dunes in Schouwen-Duiveland are not only beautiful but also provide opportunities for various outdoor activities and relaxation. Horse-riding, biking, walking, swimming and other watersports like kiteboarding and windsurfing. And if photography is your hobby…… Take an extra Sd card with you! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My best friend Lenie was born in Zeeland. If we visit Zeeland together, we should sit down by the Schelde river. (about a half an hour drive from Zierikzee). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
