The best time planting for spring flowering bulbs is now!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A title with\u00a0flower bulbs\u00a0in it and I am Dutch, does that mean tulips, tulips, tulips. No not at all.\u00a0But I do love\u00a0(is it budding or\u00a0sprouting) flower bulbs in early, mid, and late\u00a0spring.\u00a0In this post more about\u00a0what,\u00a0where,\u00a0when and\u00a0why.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0are flower bulbs<\/span><\/h2>\n

Flower bulbs’ is a collective name for plants that have a\u00a0round, thick underground stem, sending roots downwards and leaves upwards.\u00a0There are\u00a0bulbs\u00a0for every season but in this\u00a0blog,\u00a0I limit myself to the spring flowering bulbs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bulbs are very versatile, not\u00a0only available in\u00a0all\u00a0kinds\u00a0of\u00a0colors\u00a0and shapes, but also with\u00a0different appearances\u00a0from exceptionally fine to large,\u00a0attention-grabbing\u00a0flowers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To make a choice have a look at size, height, time of year they flower,\u00a0colors,\u00a0tones,\u00a0and shapes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another point of interest is maintenance.\u00a0For me perennial bulbs are preferable because you can leave them in the\u00a0garden,\u00a0so you do not have to store them in winter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My Favorite Flower bulbs\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

are pastel colored and have fragile shapes:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Mid to late spring: Bluebells or the\u00a0 Hyacinthoides non-scripta<\/span><\/span>\u00a0are my absolute favorite. They will give you a dreamy garden every year and\u00a0<\/span>there will be more of them each\u00a0time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Early to mid-spring: Galanthus, (snowdrop)\u00a0heralds of\u00a0springtime<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Mid to late spring:\u00a0Muscari\u00a0(druifje),\u00a0white, purple, pink\u00a0or blue are always beautiful. I usually have them inside the house on my birthday in\u00a0February.\u00a0A big bowl on the dining table. After some weeks I\u00a0plant them wherever there is space outside.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Early to\u00a0mid-spring:\u00a0Scilla,\u00a0early color\u00a0and always feels\u00a0like\u00a0the\u00a0start\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0gardening\u00a0season,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Mid to Late spring:\u00a0Fritillaria, I love the look of\u00a0Fritillaria\u00a0but to be honest they\u00a0do not\u00a0grow very well in my garden.\u00a0But I try it every year again.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Mid to late spring: Tulips, I prefer tulips in white or light yellow and I use them in containers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Mid to late spring: Leucojum, looks like\u00a0snowdrops.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Of course, this is very personal, so have a look at catalogues. Choose a color or style and make your own selection.\u00a0Maybe you\u00a0love blue Muscari with red Tulips. And remember in nature all colors match.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Where<\/span>\u00a0to plant bulbs<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Flower bulbs are beautiful in\u00a0all kinds of gardens.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    In\u00a0large fields\u00a0with\u00a0bluebells or daffodils\u00a0they can form a tapestry\u00a0under the\u00a0trees.\u00a0You can put them in clusters or\u00a0use them dotted in a\u00a0flowerbed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    But in\u00a0small gardens (like mine) there is always room for some bulbs and if you have no garden at all, put a container with bulbs at your front door.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Look at your bulbs like you look at perennials. Use the larger ones at the back and the smaller ones at the front of the border.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Bulbs can grow in most soils but not\u00a0too\u00a0wet, so if\u00a0you have wet clay\u00a0soils,\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0better use\u00a0containers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Autumn is a suitable time for planting flower bulbs. The earth is still warm and moist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
